Acoustic and Vibroacoustic Analysis
Structural vibrations and acoustics are tightly coupled: Hereby, several phenomena are of importance:
- External or internal noise sources can excite noise-induced structural vibrations. At the worst, these vibrations can damage the component. Furthermore, a vibrat
- A vibrating structure acts as a noise source, comparable to a loudspeaker, and thereby radiates undesirable noise into the environment. The level of the radiated noise does hereby not only depend on the level of vibration, but also on the spatial shape of the vibration (mode shape).
- Hollow parts exhibit acoustic resonances (the principle of an organ-pipe!). If the natural frequencies of an acoustic resonance is close to that of a strucural resonance, there is a coupling between the two which leads to an amplification of noise and vibration. This phenomenon exists especially for thin-walled structures with a relatively large interiour volume (like e.g. a passenger cabin).

We measure noise-induced vibrations, structure-borne noise, noise radiation, sound spectra, spatial sound power distributions as well as resonance frequencies and geometric mode shapes of structural and acoustic modes. Together with the customer we work out methods for improving the acoutic properties of his products. Therefor we use passive measures as well as active concepts (adaptive structures/smart structures).
